If you grow your vegies or fruit trees in pots, it’s important to use a top-notch potting mix. Here are three foolproof recipes, including one for starting from scratch.
- Vegie DIY potting mix Combine one part compost, one part aged animal manure and two parts black-tick potting mix. Blend well.
- Seed-raising mix Combine four parts sifted compost (to remove large pieces), two parts sand and one part worm castings. Blend well.
- Potting mix from scratch You can make a DIY potting mix from scratch using leaf mould (composted leaves) and regular compost as the base. To make leaf mould, form a tall circular frame out of wire mesh and position it in a shady spot. Gather fallen leaves and pile them into the frame, wetting each layer as you add more leaves. Cover with a tarp to help maintain moisture. Check regularly and add water, if needed. After a while, it will become black, rich and crumbly. Combine one part leaf mould, one part sand and two parts regular compost, and blend well.
