Broad beans are one of the quintessential cooler season crops.

When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Sunny spot; protection from wind; good drainage
Soil: Incorporate well-rotted compost and check the pH. If it’s below 6.5, add some lime.
How to start: SEED: Sow direct in the ground or in punnets into seed-raising mix. 30mm deep. Water well and keep moist. Don't overwater as the seed can rot. Germinates in 7-14 days. SEEDLING: Plant 15cm apart in rows 20cm apart. This allows plants to support each other without the need for individual stakes. SUPPORT: Place a stake in each corner of the block with twine wrapped around the outside to keep the crop contained. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Gradually increase watering as plants grow. Keep mulched with straw Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly.
When to harvest: Harvest from 12 weeks on. Eat the entire pod small, or leave on the plant to mature for the beans.
Troubleshooting: Aphids; cutworm; snails and slugs; rats
