Lettuce is fast and easy to grow year round in most climates. Choose from hearting varieties or cut-and-come-again types.
When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements:
Cool to warm conditions; full sun to part shade
Soil:
Well-drained soil enriched with compost and/or well-rotted manure or organic pellets.
How to start: SEED: Sow direct or in punnets into seed-raising mix, 3mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 7-14 days. SEEDLING: Plant outside when seedlings have a few leaves and are big enough to handle easily. Space them 30cm apart, in rows 50cm apart. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep moist and mulch with straw. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly. Shade plants in hot weather.
When to harvest: Harvest in 8-12 weeks. For leafing varieties harvest outside leaves as needed. For hearting varieties, harvest when lettuce is full sized.
