Lemongrass

The stems of lemongrass are used medicinally and to impart a subtle citrus flavour to curries and other hot dishes.

When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Full sun; moist well-drained soil
Soil: Well-drained but moist soil enriched with compost and/or well-rotted manure or organic pellets.
How to start: SEED: Sow in punnets or small pots in seed-raising mix, 3mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 7-14 days. SEEDLING: Plant outside or into a 20-30cm pot when seedlings are 5-10cm+ tall. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep on the moist side. Mulch with straw. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly.
When to harvest: Start harvesting from 10 weeks, removing the outer stems as required. It's best to cut them off rather than pulling, to avoid pulling out the whole plant.
Troubleshooting: Powdery mildew
