Elaine

Elaine is a richly planted private garden surrounding a historically significant 1880s Victorian timber residence, listed on the City of Boroondara Heritage Register. Once part of the Shenley Estate, the garden reflects over 30 years of thoughtful care by owner Annie James, who has embraced a relaxed, diverse planting style that celebrates seasonal change and biodiversity.

With no chemical use, Elaine has become a sanctuary for birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The garden features a variety of distinct areas, including a vibrant driveway garden, a citrus- and rose-filled pool garden, a shaded north garden beneath a grand English Elm, and the eastern verandah bed, a favourite spot for birdwatching and leisurely breakfasts.

Three majestic mature trees, a Blue Atlas Cedar, a Northern Red Oak, and an English Elm, are listed on Boroondara Council’s Significant Tree Register and form the structural heart of the garden, offering shade and a sense of permanence.

Refined with input from gardener Alex Kardamitsis, the garden remains personal and welcoming. Whether you’re drawn to plant diversity, historic garden settings, or peaceful green spaces, Elaine offers a unique and intimate garden experience.
