Nakari is a breathtaking four-acre garden located at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges in Narre Warren East. Designed by award-winning landscape designer Phillip Johnson, Nakari is a climate-focused garden with sustainability and habitat restoration at its heart. Set atop the property’s highest point, the garden provides 360-degree views and an immersive experience in Australian native flora.
What started as sloping paddocks and a leaking dam has transformed into a thriving landscape. A flowing creek now feeds a billabong, waterfall and restored dam, while large dolomite boulders from Mansfield Quarry add natural drama to the landscape. Native plants hum with birds and bees, frogs call from the waterways, and winding paths encourage exploration.
Owners Rex and Elaine planned Nakari as a multigenerational sanctuary that is both beautiful and purposefully sustainable. Reclaimed materials from old sheds and fence posts have been repurposed, and over 6,500 trees have been planted to provide windbreaks and wildlife corridors.
Phillip Johnson’s design philosophy runs throughout: a living ecosystem designed to evolve, host wildlife, capture water, and withstand climate change.
