Festive table decor with Australian blooms

Natural sparkle

Add some botanical goodness to your table setting this festive season.

Decorating with fresh flowers and foliage – native or non-native – can turn a meal into a memorable occasion. In the December issue of ABC Gardening Australia magazine, we showcase the artistry of two florists – one using sweet, softly-toned natives, one working with pretty perennials – to inspire you in creating your own joyous displays. Here’s a preview:

Native scenes

Working from her studio in Fremantle, WA, florist Donna Hamilton (@thefreoflorist) celebrates local native blooms in all her creations. “When I design with them, I like to think I’m expressing a link between our land and the people who are gathering to share a special moment,” she says. Here, Donna has used a palette of white, silver and green for a subtle festive feel. “It’s fresh, soft and classic, with really Australian vibes.” Use plants foraged from your own backyard, or bought locally, to emulate the shapes and tones of Donna’s designs.

Festive colour

Renowned for her glorious garden brimming with seasonal colour, Melbourne florist and gardener Petrina Burrill (@petrinablooms) loves creating exuberant table settings, but always lets nature take centrestage: “Blue and white – think hydrangea, jacaranda, gardenia – is a classic summer-table combo. But green and pink is fresh and playful, and will elevate your setting every time!” Garden roses are the hero in this pink-led setting, layered over a base of ivy and jasmine stems.
