Ravishing new roses

Ravishing new roses

Story by

Rose lovers, prepare to swoon. These new varieties offer a heady array of forms, colours and fragrance.

There are numerous rose breeders around the world that specialise in creating new roses for home gardeners. Year in, year out, they cross-pollinate roses and nurture thousands of seedlings to see if something special appears. The seedlings that show promise are then grown for several years to see how they perform longer-term. Only a tiny percentage make it through – but those that do are truly magnificent. Here’s just one standout for 2026.

Lancelot

This shrub rose, pictured, from German breeder Rosen Tantau is a top pick for us thanks to its striking flowers. The double blooms are cupped, up to 8cm across, and filled with the most unusual pink petals, which are sprinkled with dark flecks. The fragrance is moderate and the foliage is healthy and dark green. The plant reaches 1.5m tall.

There are many more simply stunning newly released roses, including the Australian-bred ‘Queenie’ and ‘Firecracker’ varieties. Read more in our May issue – on sale now!
