Culraven & Chiltern Park

Culraven is one of three gardens Edna Walling designed for the Ringland-Anderson family, who purchased the property in 1941. Although no formal plan survives, Walling personally directed the garden’s layout alongside renowned craftsmen Eric Hammond and Ellis Stones, creating many of the stone features and structural elements that remain today. Current owners Hugh and Liz have carefully restored and enhanced the garden, working with Aaron Condon (head gardener at Coome) and others to honour Walling’s original vision.
The front garden unfolds as three distinct garden rooms, each separated by magnificent, sprawling yews. Beyond lies six acres of enchanting woodland, with over two and a half acres richly planted with exotic trees and shrubs. Mossy paths meander through the garden, revealing hidden vistas before leading visitors to citrus, fruit and  chestnut orchards. The garden comes alive in October with vibrant displays of rhododendrons and azaleas.  This is a rare opportunity to experience a lovingly restored Edna Walling garden that has never before opened to the public.
