Nillumbik Cottage – Open Gardens Victoria

Set in the leafy, semi-rural surrounds of Research, Nillumbik Cottage is a charming miner’s cottage surrounded by a garden lovingly transformed over more than 25 years.
When Felicity arrived in 1999, the one-third-acre property was dominated by agapanthus and ageing prunus trees. Drawing on her background in gardening and floristry, she gradually reshaped the garden, guided by the plants that thrive and new ideas that continue to evolve with the seasons.
The front garden and verge feature luminous lime-green Euphorbia lambii, underplanted with herbs, succulents and aloes to create a colourful, drought-tolerant entrance. Felicity’s distinctive fused glass and blacksmith-crafted metal sculptures add character and moments of fun throughout. A recycled reo-fence incorporates quirky glass panels, while an old footed bath provides a secluded retreat.
Created by an Open Gardens Victoria volunteer garden selector and self-described ‘out of control plant collector’, Nillumbik Cottage is a delightful oasis. Visitors can purchase plants and Felicity’s glass and metalwork, with a portion of gate takings donated to Eltham Rural Group.
