Described by gardening writer Megan Backhouse as ‘an enchanting space that blurs the line between the productive and purely ornamental’, landscape designer Deb Hambleton’s inspirational country-style garden is built around a circa 1860s bluestone cottage. Formality and symmetry, romance and wildness, ornamental and productive plants, all mingle with local recycled materials and artefacts from overseas, creating a sense of character throughout.
Melrose is a garden not easily categorised, with a strong Mediterranean theme, dry climate plantings, elements of cottage gardens, an extensive use of productive plants in an ornamental context, and a mix of formality and informality. Above all, Deb’s aim was to create beauty and abundance.
The owners expect this to be their last public opening.
