Bentwood’s story began in 2000, when Open Gardens Victoria’s Head of Selectors and her husband fell in love with a slightly abandoned house, surrounded by a paddock full of weeds, rubbish and dumped cars.
Over two decades of hands-on work (soil improvement, tree planting, the creative use of salvaged materials and a deep commitment to sustainable gardening) have transformed the block into a thriving, resilient and ever-evolving two-acre (plus cut-flower paddock) country garden.
Since its last opening in 2021, new projects have brought fresh energy to the space. The loss of a Grevillea robusta inspired a redesign of the front area, with improved parking, winding paths, and rock walls around the mulberry. A new path behind the fruit tree hedge leads to the chickens, bordered by citrus, natives, and salvias. The long-dreamt-of potting shed, built from reclaimed materials, is finally complete.
Vintage finds, old outbuildings and upcycled pieces add whimsy to this charming garden, while stunning views across Yarra Glen and the Kinglake Ranges provide a serene backdrop.
Yarra Valley painter Beth Williams will exhibit her landscapes in the old mechanic’s shed, alongside works by Kalorama-based ceramicist Mel Eliades. Sculptor Pat Flanagan will also display his works throughout the garden.
