Open Gardens Victoria, in partnership with the Friends of Edna Walling at Bickleigh Vale Village, will open influential landscape designer Edna Walling’s Bickleigh Vale to commemorate 100 years since work commenced on her most enduring and acclaimed project.
Eight of Bickleigh Vale’s gardens will open to the public. The secret lanes and shared paths of Bickleigh Vale provide a magical step back in time. Hidden down long driveways, tucked under canopies of mature trees, and surrounded by charming woodland gardens, the village retains the essence and charm that Walling established a century ago.
Visitors will discover a springtime world cloaked in green—the colour Walling felt was most important in the garden. By wandering through the rambling landscape, the unique character of Walling’s celebrated garden design is revealed: copses of mature trees, carpets of spring bulbs, signature shrubs and flowers, and wisteria-draped arbours.
