Braeburn House, located on the outskirts of Beeac in the Colac Otway Shire, is a two-acre landscaped garden created around a historic Western District bluestone homestead. Skilled horticulturalist Bob Millen has poured twenty years of work and love into this eclectic garden of curiosity and beauty.
Two mature Canary Island palms planted in the 1800s stand guard over the property, drawing the eye to the red Art Nouveau gates that frame the homestead beyond. This formal area of the garden features box hedges, rose beds, perennial borders, elegant pines, and a beautiful, mature Golden Ash.
The Manchurian Pear-lined driveway leads to an artistic arid garden filled with rocks, succulents, and yuccas of various shapes and textures, dotted around with rustic, rural sculptures and garden art. To the east, the Asian-inspired garden contains many rare and unusual plants, and a large red moon gate frames the view to the neighbouring paddocks.
Other highlights include the ‘odds and sods garden’, filled with different species of trees, shrubs, roses, and perennials; an old orchard, home to heritage apples and pears and a beautiful stone-lined well of historic significance; and the ‘cook and chook’ garden, alive with organically grown produce and chickens.
