Open Gardens Victoria kicks off autumn with the first-time opening of Casely, the beautiful private garden of Peter Sheppard, retired businessman and founder of luxury shoe store Peter Sheppard Footwear.
Set on 18 acres in Beaconsfield Upper, Casely is a diverse garden, comprising three distinct ‘rooms ’with views across the region. Peter purchased the property nearly 20 years ago, when he saw the enormous potential to create an interesting garden, inspired by his extensive travels.
The first room is a 2000 square metre succulent garden filled with numerous agaves, aeonium, sedum, echeveria, and cacti. This garden is always in flower and is the ultimate low-maintenance garden, regularly visited by the local birdlife.
The Japanese garden is on a steep slope and includes many feature trees and plants, including black pine, Japanese maples, junipers, and cherries, a well as a stunning pagoda. A beautiful waterfall and creek flow into a large pond at the base. Visitors are encouraged to listen out for the resident frogs.
The conservatory garden follows a more formal English style, with straight lines, trimmed hedges, and geometric garden beds. The impressive conservatory—built on site after being shipped over from Ireland—was part of an award-winning garden at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and now stands as a beautiful feature.

Casely is located on the lands of the Bunurong people. Open Gardens Victoria wish to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
