Cassington Wood, is a rambling, peaceful family garden, set on nearly seven acres in leafy Eltham, Victoria.
Described by owners Chris and Alan Field as a ‘gardener’s garden’, Cassington Wood was established 42 years ago. Many of the plants in the garden originate from cuttings and seeds collected over the years, helping to create an enchanting sanctuary for three generations of the Field family.
“The garden can be recognised in three parts,” says Alan. “The Multicultural Garden—the formal areas around the driveway and house. The Bush Garden, which complements and supports a vibrant habitat link. And the Gully, where two dams accommodate the many water birds and native animals who make it their home.” The dams feed automatically into an extensive garden irrigation system for the formal garden area.
The house captures garden views from every window while the formal garden was created by hand with shovels, picks, and wheelbarrows. The Bush Garden provides an important habitat link for local flora and fauna, and is dedicated to indigenous plants and trees. This area is ideal for bird watching, with a campfire area that is used year-round, but especially when the grandchildren gather with fresh yabbies from the dam to cook.
