Inge’s Little Garden

Inge's Little Garden, Open Gardens Victoria

Tucked away in the leafy suburb of Diamond Creek, just 25km northeast of Melbourne, Inge’s Little Garden is a shining example of what’s possible in a suburban backyard. Opening to visitors for one weekend as part of Open Gardens Victoria, this productive and ever-evolving vegetable garden is packed with seasonal bounty, grown with heart, intuition, and a passion for sustainability.

Since retiring in 2019, owner Inge Hansen has transformed a simple lawn into a thriving edible oasis, now home to 20 raised garden beds, two large Vegepods, ten Greensmart wicking boxes, and a 16m² greenhouse. From tomatoes and leafy greens to turmeric and ginger, almost everything is grown from seed, enough to feed Inge’s household and her extended family year-round.

With a ‘trial and error’ approach and an open mind, Inge’s gardening style is refreshingly practical: grow what works, and try something new if it doesn’t. Recently featured in the June issue of Gardening Australia magazine, this inspiring space showcases the power of homegrown food and the joy of gardening for self-sufficiency, health, and family connection.
