Plastic Free July, a global movement led by the Plastic Free Foundation, empowers millions of people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution. It began in 2011 with a small but powerful idea: founder Rebecca Prince-Ruiz challenged 40 people from her local Fremantle community to go plastic-free for a month. With over 30 years’ experience in environmental work, waste management and sustainability, Rebecca was inspired to act after a life-changing visit to a Perth recycling facility. “I was confronted by the sight—and smell—of my own waste, mixed with that of my neighbours and community. We talk about throwing things ‘away’, but I’d never realised that ‘away’ is a real place.” This July, choose to refuse single-use plastic and help create cleaner streets, parks and oceans. In the garden, opt for compostable seedling pots, plastic-free tools, and biodegradable alternatives like popsicle sticks for plant markers.
