Rooted in Healing: Folk Remedies using the Humble Spud

Part of The Great Trentham Spudfest – Discovery Day, this hands-on workshop at Acre of Roses explores the humble potato through the lens of traditional herbal care.
Led by herbalist and The Medicinal Garden author Caroline Parker, the session introduces the time-honoured practice of making potato poultices — simple remedies long used in home herbal medicine. Participants will learn how these preparations work, when to use hot or cold poultices, and how to grate, prepare and apply them using everyday kitchen ingredients.
The workshop is practical and collaborative, with guests making and applying poultices together so they leave confident to recreate the technique at home. Set in the peaceful surrounds of Acre of Roses, the session offers a relaxed introduction to traditional plant-based skills. Refreshments are provided.
Spudfest Discovery Day opens the gates to farms, gardens and makers across Trentham and neighbouring towns, offering a chance to explore the region’s rich volcanic soils and learn directly from the people who grow here year-round.
