SerpenTine

SerpenTine is a whimsical, eco-conscious, nearly half-acre garden located in Rowville, in Melbourne’s outer south east. Purchased by owners Tine and Wayne Grimston in 1993, this large garden has a strong focus on sustainability with water tanks and solar panels, fruit and nut trees, a veggie garden, indigenous and native plants, and a pond, as well as water-wise salvias, grasses, a variety of potted succulents, and beautiful roses.

Winding sawdust paths create interest, leading to hidden surprises in corners of the garden. Thus, SerpenTine is a clever play on both the name of the owner, Tine, and the curved edges and pathways that snake their way around the garden.

Many plants can be found growing in recycled or thrifted objects, and the garden is filled with reclaimed treasures, such as rescued pots, garden furniture, mirrors, birdcages, and wheelbarrows.

SerpenTine is also part of the Knox Gardens for Wildlife Scheme, an initiative that helps residents support native wildlife by creating suitable habitat. Tine’s diligent efforts have paid off, as the garden now serves as a haven, food source, and shelter for a diverse range of wildlife, including possums, bats, lizards, a wide variety of birds, and a flourishing insect community.
