The Big Little Garden

Three years ago, young professional gardener Adam Hancock and partner Phoebe opened their amazing small garden, aptly named the Little Big Garden. Now in a new location they have created their Big Little Garden – also appropriately named because here they have used a small section of a large block to create another equally as spectacular garden.

The garden is still a work in progress with only a portion of the 1.5acre block yet planted but it is inspiring to see what has been achieved in a short time. In a rectangular area, foliage and flowers spill over onto a network of narrow little sawdust paths that crisscross through the garden beds. Towering above head height are buttery yellow rudbeckia, huge golden sunflowers, bright annual cosmos with their lovely soft lime green ferny foliage, purple verbena and eupatorium. Crammed in amongst and adding more colour are salvias, shasta daisies, gaura, agastache, pink echinacea and zinnias but the scene stealers are the many dahlias with flamboyant flowers in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Adam is interested in local flora and has included some indigenous native species.
