The Stamp Garden, located on the King River flats on the outskirts of bustling Wangaratta, is a quiet sanctuary that Rhonda and Ray Stamp established about 35 years ago. The seven-acre block with a sprawling two-acre garden runs down to a permanent River Red Gum-lined billabong that provides water year-round for the expansive garden.
A massive red gum, thought to be about 300 years old, provides a focal point at the bottom of the garden, providing shade for swimming, canoeing, and the tranquil BBQ area.
“Our location on the river flats means the property has good soil, great drainage, and plenty of water. So there’s no excuse to not have a garden,” says Ray.
Silver poplars, oaks and Chinese elms are just a few of the trees featured, many of which will be in beautiful autumn colour at the opening. The older trees were planted by Rhonda when they bought the land, while the current house and trees are 10-15 years old.
The garden has evolved, with the beds being expanded every few years while leaving big portions of lawn for their kids and grandsons to kick a football or play cricket on. The result is a peaceful haven that feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of life.
