Cabbage is a leafy plant that forms tight- or loose-leaf heads. This versatile vegetable can be boiled, fermented or enjoyed fresh!

When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Full sun; good drainage; medium water needs
Soil: Add aged manure or compost. Add lime or dolomite if pH is less than 6.5.
How to start: SEED: Sow in punnets into seed-raising mix, 5mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 4-10 days. SEEDLINGS: Plant outside when seedlings are 7-10cm+ tall. Space 30cm apart in rows 40cm apart. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep moist and mulched with straw. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly.
When to harvest: Harvest in 8-14 weeks, depending on the variety. The head should be well-formed with tightly packed leaves. Cut off the entire plant at ground level.
Troubleshooting: Cabbage white butterfly; cabbage moth; aphids; slugs and snails.
