A popular bitter-leaf vegetable, endive is quick and easy to grow.
When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements:
Needs cooler conditions; water well around, not on, the plant
Soil:
Well-drained soil enriched with compost and/or well-rotted manure or organic pellets.
How to start: SEED: Sow direct in the ground or in punnets into seed-raising mix, 5mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 4-7 days. SEEDLING: Plant outside when seedlings are 5-10cm+ tall. Space 30cm apart, in rows 50cm apart. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep moist, weed free, and mulched with straw. Thin seedlings to 30cm. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. If soil is poor, apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly.
When to harvest: Harvest from 10 weeks. Pick outer leaves at the base, as required.
