Horseradish

This root veg is popular for its hot and spicy taste. Make it into a creamy sauce to use on meat or baked potato, or grate and pickle it.

When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Sun or shade; will grow in deep container; unfussy
Soil: Loose soil, 25cm+ deep, with debris removed. Enriched with compost and well-rotted manure or organic pellets.
How to start: ROOT CUTTING: Plant the root cutting deep enough to just cover it. If there's a shoot, plant it facing upwards. Space cuttings 30cm apart. Water well and mulch. Keep moist until leaves have appeared in 2-4 weeks.
How to grow: Keep moist to ensure sweet, succulent roots. Don't fertilise. If soil is poor, apply fertiliser that is low in nitrogen and high in phosphorous. Keep the area weed free.
When to harvest: Harvest from 30 weeks when leaves start dying. Dig up the entire crop using a garden fork to loosen the soil.
Troubleshooting: Cabbage white butterfly; cabbage moth
