Thyme
Select Your Climate

A useful herb that, once established, doesn’t take much care. Use it fresh or dried.
When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements:
Full sun in a permanent, well-drained position; copes with dry conditions; great in containers
Soil:
Very well-drained soil. Don't add compost or manure.
How to start: SEED: Sow in punnets or 10cm pots, into seed-raising mix, 2mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 14-21 days. SEEDLING: Plant in the ground or into a 20-30cm diameter pot when seedlings are large enough to handle easily. If in the ground, space them 30cm apart. Water in and mulch with hay.
How to grow: Keep on the drier side - thyme doesn't like to be too wet. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. If soil is poor, apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly.
When to harvest: Harvest from 4-6 weeks, cutting off stems as required.
Troubleshooting:
Downy mildew; wilt
