Gardening is a learning curve, and every gardener makes mistakes along the way. In the latest issue of our magazine, Chloe Foster reveals 20 common mistakes and how to avoid them.
Below are some common errors made by newbies, and ways to avoid them.
Mistake: Buying a plant simply because you like the flowers or foliage.
Why it’s a problem: The plant might not suit your climate, soil or growing conditions, and struggle to thrive.
The right approach: Get to know your garden first. Consider your climate, soil and availability of space and sunlight, then choose plants that suit those conditions.
Mistake: ignoring the plant label.
Why it’s a problem: Plant labels contain valuable information about a plant’s preferred growing conditions and tolerances. Ignore them and you’re more likely to end up with a struggling plant.
The right approach: Read the label before you buy. Use the growing information and symbols to match the plant to a similar spot in your garden.
Mistake: Planting in the wrong place (for sun, shade, frost, drainage or mature size).
Why it’s a problem: Every plant has preferred growing conditions. Put it in the wrong location and it may become leggy, flower or fruit poorly, grow slowly or eventually decline.
The right approach: Match each plant to the conditions it prefers, giving it the right amount of sun, suitable soil, good drainage and enough room to reach its mature size.
