Calatheas

Captivating calatheas

Story by

With their striking foliage, calatheas are the stars of the indoor plant world. And with so many varieties, it’s hard to stop at just one. Here are five top picks to bring a lush tropical vibe to your space.

Goeppertia makoyana (syn. Calathea makoyana)

This plant’s broad, glossy leaves patterned with dark green markings are reminiscent of a peacock’s tail feathers. It prefers bright indirect light and moderate humidity levels, so place on a pebble tray filled with water or group with other humidity-loving plants.

Goeppertia insignis (syn. Calathea lancifolia)

This looks similar to G. makoyana, except it has long, narrow sword-like leaves with wavy margins. Its light green foliage is decorated with a mix of long and short dark green markings and contrasting deep purple undersides. Position it in bright indirect light, although it can tolerate lower-light conditions.

Goeppertia orbifolia (syn. Calathea orbifolia)

A highly sought after species with large luxuriant foliage marked with distinctive silvery veins, this bold statement plant requires a little more care than most to maintain its good looks. Keep humidity high and avoid cold draughts. It thrives in bright indirect light but is also tolerant of lower-light conditions.

Goeppertia lietzei ‘White Fusion’ (syn. Calathea lietzei)

A striking specimen with green and white leaves and purple-pink undersides, this calathea’s beautifully variegated leaves look as though they’ve been painted on, making it a wonderful statement piece for the home. Give it bright indirect light and ensure the humidity is high (place it in a terrarium or use a humidifier).

Goeppertia kegeljanii (syn. Calathea musaica)

This is also known as the network calathea, named for the intricate mosaic-like patterns on its glossy dark green leaves. It looks great on a tabletop or bookshelf, where it has access to bright indirect light. It prefers moderate to high humidity, otherwise its leaves will curl and its edges will brown.
