Banool Open Gardens Vic

The 1.6-acre garden at Banool in Melbourne’s Ringwood North has been lovingly restored and updated to show off its grand original trees and stonework. Created around a historically significant stone residence (circa 1936), the property feels like a beautiful country estate.

The garden boasts a stunning collection of mature trees, many of which were planted before the original home was built and are believed to be over 100 years old. Specimens include a Copper Beech, Pin Oaks, American Red Oak, magnolias, cedars, and firs.

In 2006, garden designer Paul Bangay was invited to work with the architect and owners to link the existing tree canopies with the home and create new understories for the garden. The result is quintessential Bangay, honouring the property’s past and adding a more relaxed and informal garden where roses and perennials bloom from deep garden beds.

The owners are flower enthusiasts, and in spring the garden comes to life with mass plantings of David Austin roses, rugosa roses, foxgloves, echiums, daylilies, iris, and sedum. A selection of handmade copper swings hang from trees in the front and back lawns. Recent additions include a formal vegetable patch, citrus orchard, and a picking garden.
