Eucalypts of Hodogaya: The Architecture of the Yokohama Commonwealth War Cemetery

Curated by University of Melbourne researchers Professor Anoma Pieris and Athanasios Tsakonas, the exhibition brings together displays a comprehensive number of objects, prints, photographs, sketches, video and archival material to explore the design of the Yokohama Commonwealth War Cemetery. Through landscape architecture, it reveals how Australian and Japanese designers collaborated to create a place of memory and quiet reflection in the years following World War II.
The same exhibition is simultaneously on display at the Yokohama Archives of History Museum in Japan, and sheds light on a little-known chapter of shared history – highlighting the role of design in bridging cultures and fostering reconciliation.
