Garden jobs for July

Story by

Brave the winter chill and get busy in the garden!

Here are a few July jobs for the garden:

  • Buy camellias while they are in bloom at your garden centre
  • Service your lawnmower (or get it serviced) in preparation for spring
  • Brighten up your indoor spaces with a colourful cyclamen or pot of polyanthus
  • Inspect stored dahlia tubers and discard any mouldy or rotting ones
  • Nip off spent pansy and viola flowers to encourage new blooms
  • Feed spring bulbs fortnightly with a liquid fertiliser for flowers
  • Plant summer-blooming bulbs, such as pineapple lily (Eucomis spp.), calla lily (Zantedeschia hybrids) and Scarborough lily (Cyrtanthus elatus)
  • Plant cascading natives that flower in winter into beds or large containers – think hardenbergia, Geraldton wax, thryptomene and ground-covering wattles
  • Prune winter-blooming wattles after flowering to restrict seeding and unwanted spread
  • Cut herbaceous perennials off at ground level, chop up the clippings and add them to the compost heap
