Growing celery has its challenges, but crunching into the delicious stems makes it well worth the effort.

When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements: Cool to warm conditions, lots of water, full sun with afternoon shade and protection from strong winds.
Soil: Prepare soil by weeding, and digging through compost and well-rotted manure.
How to start: SEED: Best sown in punnets or trays into seed-raising mix, 3mm deep. Keep moist. Germinates in 14-21 days. SEEDLINGS: Plant outside when seedlings are 5-10cm+ tall. Space 30cm apart, in rows 80cm apart. Consider planting seedlings in a shallow trench which holds water where it's needed. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep moist and mulched with straw - celery shouldn't be allowed to dry out ever! Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly. Apply organic fertiliser pellets monthly. Cover with shadecloth in very hot conditions.
When to harvest: Start harvesting from 16 weeks. Pick. the outside stalks when plants look established.
