When to plant/sow in zone:
Requirements:
Sunny position, nutrient-rich soil with good drainage
Soil:
Well-drained soil enriched with compost. If growing in pots, 50:50 mix of compost and potting mix.
How to start: SEED: Best sown direct in the ground. 6mm deep, 20cm apart, in rows 20cm apart. Or scatter seed randomly. Keep moist. Germinates in 7-10 days. SEEDLING: Plant outside or into pots when seedlings are 5-10cm+ tall. Water in and mulch with straw.
How to grow: Keep moist. Thin seedlings so plants are 20cm apart. Eat the thinnings. Apply seaweed solution or liquid fertiliser fortnightly.
When to harvest: Start harvesting from 5 weeks as needed. Cut outside leaves at the base using scissors to minimise damage to plants, which will continue to grow.
Troubleshooting:
Aphids; leaf spot; snail and slugs
