Repotting an orchid is necessary from time to time to keep your plant healthy. Not quite sure where to begin? Follow these easy steps.
When to repot orchids
When an orchid is literally busting out of its container, it’s time to give it a little nip and tuck. Here’s how…
How to re-pot an orchid
- PULL the plant gently out of its pot and remove the old potting mix.
- TRIM off any rotting or damaged material from the roots, using sharp scissors or secateurs. Sterilise the blades with methylated spirits between cuts to avoid spreading infection.
- RETURN the bare-rooted plant to the same container (or the next size up), and backfill with a specialised orchid potting mix. Don’t worry if a few rogue roots pop out the top – that’s quite normal, and as they are epiphytes, they like it that way.
- DUNK the pot into a larger container of water to saturate the potting mix (leave it there for five minutes or so). Add a little seaweed solution to the water to help reduce transplant shock and encourage root development. Allow the excess water to drain out before returning the pot to its saucer or decorative outer pot.
