An increasing numbers of people are embracing the joys of growing their own food and connecting with nature...
Aussies are digging deep and rediscovering the therapeutic benefits of cultivating green spaces, whether it’s for relaxation, fitness or homegrown food.
Gardening was one of the great discoveries for a lot of home-bound people during the pandemic. And it seems the interest hasn’t disappeared, with increasing numbers of people embracing the joys of growing their own food and connecting with nature.
According to a recent survey conducted by digital reading app Readly, gardening is experiencing a notable surge in popularity, transcending age groups and lifestyles. The study revealed that up to 76% of Australians enjoy gardening as a leisurely pursuit.
Urban gardening is on the rise, as houseplants and tiny gardens surge on social media. Indoor plant owners make up 33% of the population, and 1 in 5 Aussies enjoy caring for plants on their balconies, dispelling the notion that gardening is confined to spacious yards.
Gardening also serves as a powerful catalyst for fostering a sense of community, and 21% of those with children at home love to tend plants in their community garden, an activity most enjoyed in NSW and Victoria.
Rooted in relaxation
For 56% of Australians, relaxation, fresh air, and physical activity are the main motivators for gardening. Additionally, for 65% of Australians aged 60 and above, tending to their gardens is not only a source of relaxation but also their preferred form of exercise.
Sustainability is another reason why people are getting their hands dirty, with 38% of people choosing to garden for this reason. Other respondents say gardening unleashes their creative side, makes their homes more aesthetic and allows them to learn new skills.
A growing industry
From 2021 to 2022, production nurseries sold an estimated 2.3 billion plants worth $3.6 billion, according to the Nursery Levy funded 2021–22 Production Nursery Data Capture Report. The growing industry surrounding plants reflects the enduring appeal of gardening, even in the face of economic challenges. Despite these numbers, people are still conscious of spending, with 33% of the population prioritising low-cost plants.
With a significant portion of Australians investing their time and money into their gardens, it’s clear that our love affair with gardening is set to flourish for years to come.
