Natural remedies

More than two years after a storm ravaged the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, an initiative driven by the Yarra Ranges Council is providing support, hope and practical solutions.

Deb Sargentson, who joined the Council as a community officer not long after the June 2021 event, has been instrumental in setting up the Healing in our Gardens program, which aims to restore, re-imagine and rebuild gardens; forge supportive community connections; and sustain the natural environment and its native inhabitants. Four of Deb’s neighbours lost their homes, and she lost 17 mature trees. “Living in the Dandenongs, an area known for its beautiful gardens and environment, many of us feel our gardens are spaces of sanctuary, memories and family – of hope and growth and healing,” she says. About 200 residents are involved. “People are strengthening friendships and building new ones. For the displaced, it’s enabling them to stay connected with their community,” explains Deb. “Many struggle to talk about their experience, but when you’re working with someone in the garden, it’s amazing what you’ll feel comfortable to share. The forest is healing itself… and people are finding new plants, rare orchids and ferns. They’re feeling more positive about the future.” Find more information, here.
