Summer gardening care

Summer is an important season for gardeners. With the forecast of a hot dry summer, you’ll need to prepare your garden for the heat and stresses that lie ahead. Consider planting a shade tree to help keep the house cool over the summer.

Have a look around your garden and identify which plants need a little help. Prune back diseased and damaged stems and consider moving plants that aren’t thriving in their current location, especially those that are getting too much or too little sun. If the weather is very hot, dry or wet, hold off transplanting until autumn. Check mulch levels and top up where necessary to keep the soil cool and moist. Also check that watering systems are working well and no areas are left dry. Regular deep watering of established plants once or twice a week encourages good growth, as their roots head deep down into the soil to take up water and nutrients.

• Seasol hose-on pack: Simply attach the pack to your hose every two to four weeks and water your garden. Each 2L hose-on pack treats up to 100m² of garden or lawn.
