Some like it hot

There are plenty of potted plants that thrive in the heat but here are a few faves.
Potted plants add visual impact and are perfect for small spaces. But in summer, extra care is critical to ensure they survive the heat. Plant choice is also critical for success. Perth-based garden writer (and potted plant aficionado) Deryn Thorpe lists her three heat-loving favourites…
Heart-leaf mallee (Eucalyptus websteriana) grows to about 3m high in containers, has attractive ‘minni ritchi’ bark, large yellow flowers in spring, and grey, heart-shaped leaves.

Olive trees (Olea europaea) are small, tough and will handle pot life with ease. Reaching 4m tall in a large container (but can be kept much smaller), their grey-green foliage complements any colour scheme. You can find fruiting and non-fruiting forms.

Dwarf lemon (Citrus x limon) is perhaps the quintessential container fruit tree, with lush foliage, fragrant blossom and the possibility of year-round fruit… what’s not to love!
