This shiny, succulent and virtually indestructible indoor plant is perfect for the forgetful gardener.
If you struggle to keep indoor plants alive due to low light and forgetful watering, Zanzibar gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a good solution. This waxy-leafed plant is tough and can continue to thrive even when neglected. The reason for this is its ability to store water in its stems, foliage and tuberous rhizome, allowing it to go for weeks without being watered.
Zanzibar gem care
Bright indirect light allows these plants to thrive, but they also adapt well to low light conditions without this affecting their growth. Water sparingly, only when the top 2cm of soil is dry, which is usually about once a month. It’s better to underwater this plant rather than overwater. To help protect plants from overwatering, use a terracotta pot. The container’s porous surface absorbs some of the excess moisture. Feed with slow-release fertiliser every six months, or use liquid fertiliser monthly during warmer months, to encourage lush growth. Maintain shiny leaves by regularly removing dust. Either wipe them down with a damp cloth or shower the foliage.
Styling tips
Smaller plants can be styled on tabletops, while larger plants bring life to darker corners, with the upright growth filling and softening the space.
