Here are 10 jobs for the garden, patch and patio to add to your May to-do list.

  • Plant nectar-producing native plants, such as grevillea, bottlebrush and melaleuca, which will attract honeyeaters to the garden.
  • Liquid-feed cyclamen every two weeks with a flower-promoting fertiliser to encourage healthy growth for the winter flowering period.
  • Prune olive trees after the last of the fruit has been harvested.
  • Sprinkle sulfate of potash around the root area of fruit trees to enhance cropping and resistance to diseases.
  • Tidy hedges and edges now, and they’ll stay looking good all through winter.
  • Scrub or pressure-clean mossy paths.
  • Harvest ripe crabapples, and find recipes for turning the fruit into jelly, refreshing juice or a sweet accompaniment to meat dishes.
  • Plant calendula in the vegetable patch to attract pollinators and other friendly insects.
  • Sow winter herbs, including coriander, dill and parsley.
  • Pot up hippeastrum bulbs, and keep them in a warm indoor spot to encourage showy late winter blooms.
