Here are 10 jobs for the garden, patch and patio to add to your May to-do list.
- Plant nectar-producing native plants, such as grevillea, bottlebrush and melaleuca, which will attract honeyeaters to the garden.
- Liquid-feed cyclamen every two weeks with a flower-promoting fertiliser to encourage healthy growth for the winter flowering period.
- Prune olive trees after the last of the fruit has been harvested.
- Sprinkle sulfate of potash around the root area of fruit trees to enhance cropping and resistance to diseases.
- Tidy hedges and edges now, and they’ll stay looking good all through winter.
- Scrub or pressure-clean mossy paths.
- Harvest ripe crabapples, and find recipes for turning the fruit into jelly, refreshing juice or a sweet accompaniment to meat dishes.
- Plant calendula in the vegetable patch to attract pollinators and other friendly insects.
- Sow winter herbs, including coriander, dill and parsley.
- Pot up hippeastrum bulbs, and keep them in a warm indoor spot to encourage showy late winter blooms.
