Clever ways to use compost

Story by

There are many more ways to make use of your homemade compost than simply digging it into the soil. Here are three handy ideas for making the most of your prized compost mix.

Mulch with compost

You can’t get a better mulch for your patch! Simply spread a 3–5cm layer over the surface of your beds (no need to dig it in) and plant into that. It’s nice and easy to work with and you don’t need to add any other kind of mulch. Top it up every 6–12 months.

Add to potting mix

If you grow vegies in pots, you can use compost to boost a regular potting mix with microbial life. Add one part compost to five parts premium potting mix and mix well.

Top-dress your lawn

If your lawn is looking lifeless and undernourished, try topping it with a 0.5–1cm layer of compost. This will get the worms and microbes working, helping to aerate and build better soil structure, while improving the overall health of the turf.
