Pot of carrots

Grow a pot of carrots

Story by

You can grow enough carrots in a pot to keep you going for months, and it’s handy being able to move it around so they get just the right amount of sun. Here’s how to get started.

  1. Choose a container at least 30cm wide and deep. If you’re growing carrots over the warmer months, go for a lighter coloured pot that won’t heat up as much, so the soil won’t dry out as fast.
  2. Fill the container to 2cm from the top with quality potting mix formulated for vegies. Add organic or slow-release fertiliser if not already in mix, plus a little coir peat to help with water retention.
  3. Carrots don’t transplant well, so use seed. Sow from spring to autumn in temperate areas, autumn to spring in the subtropics and autumn in the tropics. Water in and keep moist until seeds germinate in about 10 days. Thin to about 5cm apart.
  4. Place the pot in a spot with plenty of sunshine. When the weather warms up, move it somewhere that gets morning sun only.
  5. Keep up the water supply and give carrots a liquid feed once a fortnight.
